About Us
Driver Solutions is an occupational therapy transport assessment service for intended drivers or passengers who have difficulty with these tasks due to their medical issues.
The mission of the service is to promote safety and independence for drivers and/or passengers of all abilities to ultimately enhance quality of life and enable participation.
The service is led by a senior occupational therapy clinician Jazmine O’Kane based in Dunedin, Otago, with several years of experience in transport assessment and neurological conditions.
This service is a credentialed assessor for the Ministry of Health (Enable) Vehicle purchase and Modifications Level 1 & 2, and also a registered assessor for the Lottery Grants Board.
Our Services
Medical Fitness to Drive Assessment
To confirm whether a person with medical issues is able to continue to drive safely and according to the NZTA Waka Kotahi standards. This assessment will likely include:
Off-road assessment:
- Physical screening;
- Cognitive screening;
- Visual screening.
On-road assessment: in all traffic complexities, accompanied by a driving instructor.
Assessor report: complete with recommendations to NZTA Waka Kotahi for driver licensing purposes. A copy of this report will also be sent to your relevant medical practitioner/specialist.
Vehicle assessment and modification
This is a specialized assessment for intended drivers and/or passengers with medical issues that impact the ability to drive or access vehicles. The assessor will recommend suitable vehicle options and modifications to allow safe and effective driving and/or wheelchair stowage.
For example:
- Mobility vans;
- Wheelchair stowable vehicles;
- Vehicles that will meet the functional needs of the individual;
- Vehicle modifications to enable independence.
